Sweden

Sweden is one of the most highly developed post-industrial societies in the world, with strong public private partnerships at the core of its economy and society.

Its population of 9.5 million enjoy an advanced welfare system, a high standard of living and long life expectancy.

In recent years the country has become a common destination for refugees and asylum seekers and now immigrants make up more than 10% of its population.

It joined the European Union in 1995, but is one of only three EU countries to have rejected the Euro.

Engineering is one of its key industries, but the home retailing chain Ikea is probably its most famous export.

Pickled herring, crispbread and lingonberries are firm favourites with most Swedes.
