Denmark is the southernmost and smallest of the Scandinavian countries.
The country’s flag was adopted in 1219, the oldest one still in use, while the Danish monarch is the oldest uninterrupted European monarchy, dating back to 934 AD/CE.
It joined the EU in 1973, but the two Danish self-governing areas of Greenland and the Faroe Islands are not part of the EU.
Its population is 5.7 million.
The fairy tale writer, Hans Christian Andersen, was Danish, as is the toy-maker Lego.
The diet is heavily based around meat, fish and potatoes, while smorrebrod (open sandwiches) are a speciality. The country is the home of Carlsberg and Tuborg beers.
