Austria is at the geographical heart of Europe, and much of the country is made up of the Alps – just a third of the land lies below 500m above sea level.

Austria’s population is 8.6 million. Tourism is the biggest industry and it joined EU in 1995.

The great composer Mozart was born in Salzburg; Schubert, Haydn, Liszt and Strauss were also Austrian, as was the conductor Herbert von Karajan. Not to mention Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The country is famous for Apfelstrudel (pastry filled with apples), Wiener schnitzel (veal fried in breadcrumbs), lots of beef and pork dishes, as well as the drink schnapps.
